Teen drivers-the college years!

Teen driving and how it affects your auto insurance - The Miller Insurance Agency Everett Washington
Now that your teen is 18, considered an adult and off to college now what?

1. If your teen is a full time student at a college more than 100 miles from home and does NOT take a vehicle with them, almost all insurance providers have a discount for that. So let your agent/carrier know.

2. We do NOT recommend you remove your college student from your auto policy completely. Your auto policy does provide important coverage to them such as personal injury protection + if they are your dependent and still come home for holidays and breaks then he/she will still need to be listed.

3. Your home policy also extends coverage to your college student renting or living in the Dorms. Contact us for specifics, but most will not require a separate renters policy for them.

4. If your teen is not on the college route, or not attending college more than part time, and/or living at home, it is typically best to continue to have them insured on your policy. Additionally, most insurance carriers will require him/her to be listed as a driver on your policy regardless of their individual insurance status.

5. Due to parents’ financial responsibility and/or assistance, please keep in mind that you the parents could be named in a lawsuit stemming from an accident caused by your teen or young adult even if they have their own policy.
